KS3 and KS4 Modern Foreign Language

KS3 and KS4 MFL

In the Modern Foreign Languages Department it is our hope that, through language acquisition, students will be empowered to look beyond their immediate horizons. The transferable skills they will learn, along with their knowledge of language, will equip them to take their place in the world of work alongside their European cousins.

Most students in Year 7 study French for two hours per week. They communicate in French every lesson and grow in confidence. In Year 8 and 9 students continue to study French for two hours or three hours per week respectively, steadily building the detail and complexity of language they use. From September 2018, select groups will study French for six months and Spanish for six months. In Year 8 they will continue with this pattern. At the end of Year 8, they will choose to continue with either French or Spanish and study this language for three hours per week during Year 9.

Students who wish to continue with their language study at a higher level may choose to take GCSE French or Spanish (if applicable) during the Year 9 Options process.

Students leaving school with language skills may find they have the advantage when applying for a place in further education and are, additionally, much more employable in today’s world.

Key Stage 3 students may have the opportunity of taking part in an eight day residential visit to France, spending time in Brittany, Paris and the Somme. This popular and long-standing educational trip is an ideal experience for students hoping to take a GCSE in the subject as it provides daily opportunities for them to use their French in real life situations.

The MFL Department love to give students the chance to shine. We award a “star of the month” certificate to two students in each KS3 class every month, displaying their photo in the Languages corridor. In addition, we regularly hold extra competitions and challenges in which students can exercise their ingenuity, creativity and knowledge of language. Our French café is open every half term to enable the sampling of typical French treats.
