KS3 Science

Students follow a mixed science course, with topics in Physics, Chemistry and Biology being taught.

Topics include:

  • Energy
  • Space
  • Acids & Alkalis
  • Chemical Reactions
  • Light & Sound
  • Biological Systems
  • Energy & Electricity
  • Reactivity
  • Human & animal psychology
  • Forensic Science


Assessment is ongoing throughout the term, with work assessed informally in books and given strengths and targets. Formal assessment is by written exam, approximately once per term, when all topics in the subject have been completed.

Support at Home

  • Ensuring homework is completed. Year 11 have a weekly revision homework that should take around 30 minutes.
  • Checking that targets have been completed in books
  • Encouraging regular access to STAR.
  • Encourage them to read a good quality science website – eg Guardian science pages
  • Watching Science based TV programmes and discuss them
  • Use revision guides and quiz them on sections covered
  • Ask students to explain everyday science – how electricity is produced, what is causing global warming, inherited diseases etc.
  • Encourage students to write down things they do not understand and bring them in.
  • Encourage a variety of revision strategies and help with these – making key word flash cards, revision posters, post-it notes etc.
