Intent
At Lostock Hall Academy, our History curriculum inspires and motivates students to develop a deep understanding of the past and its significance in shaping the modern world. Through the study of key historical concepts, including causation, interpretation, historical enquiry, significance, consequence, inference, similarity and difference, students learn to think critically, question evidence and develop informed perspectives.
We aim to foster curiosity, ambition and a lifelong interest by exploring the people, events and ideas that have influenced society. Through an inclusive curriculum that values diverse experiences and viewpoints, students deepen their social, moral, cultural and intellectual understanding of the world around them. In a safe and nurturing learning environment, students will feel safe to contribute ideas and ask questions, as history lessons encourage debate and discussion.
Students are supported to move beyond the recall of facts, developing the confidence to analyse evidence, evaluate interpretations and form their own well-reasoned judgments. In doing so, they become reflective, resilient learners who are prepared to contribute positively to their communities and future society.
Implementation
Our History curriculum is carefully sequenced to build knowledge and skills over time, enabling all students to make meaningful connections between historical periods, themes and concepts. Through engaging teaching, enquiry-based learning and regular opportunities for discussion and debate, students develop both disciplinary knowledge and wider critical thinking skills. Our learning objectives allow students to examine historical themes that are accessible for all our learners.
Students are encouraged to analyse sources, evaluate interpretations and communicate their understanding with increasing confidence and independence. High expectations, inclusive classroom practice and strong relationships ensure that every student is supported to participate, achieve and thrive. Teachers explicitly model good practice and adapt to suit all learners, as we aim to enhance and nurture students into future historians. Teachers monitor and assess students in varying ways, to allow for all historical talent to flourish.
Impact
Through studying History, students develop a greater understanding of themselves, their communities and the wider world. They leave Lostock Hall Academy as informed, thoughtful and responsible young people who can think critically, communicate effectively and make reasoned judgements based on evidence.
The skills and knowledge gained through History support students in progressing confidently to further education, employments and lifelong learning. The subject also provides strong foundations for a wide range of future careers, including teaching, research, archaeology, museum and heritage work, journalism and media, law, politics and public service.
Above all, our History curriculum helps students to become ambitious, resilient and engaged citizens who are equipped to thrive in an ever-changing world.
