Intent

At Lostock Hall Academy, our mathematics curriculum is designed to inspire aspiration and equip all students with the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to thrive in further education, employment and everyday life. In line with our vision, we believe that every student deserves access to a rich, challenging and inclusive mathematics education that promotes both academic success and personal growth.

Through a mastery approach, students develop fluency, confidence and a deep conceptual understanding of mathematics. Carefully sequenced learning, regular practice and increasingly demanding tasks enable students to build secure foundations while developing their ability to reason, recall and apply knowledge accurately and efficiently.

We aim to develop students as confident problem-solvers who can apply mathematical thinking to both routine and unfamiliar contexts. By embedding metacognitive strategies, students learn to approach challenges systematically, break complex problems into manageable steps and reflect on their thinking. Students are encouraged to communicate mathematically with precision, using appropriate vocabulary to explain, justify and evaluate their solutions.

Our curriculum nurtures resilience, independence and ambition, ensuring that all learners feel supported, valued and capable of success. Through meaningful and relevant learning experiences, students develop the mathematical knowledge and skills needed to make positive contributions to their communities and future careers.

Implementation

Lessons are carefully planned to build knowledge progressively and ensure all students can access and succeed within the curriculum. Teachers use high-quality modelling, questioning and formative assessment to identify misconceptions and deepen understanding. Students regularly engage in fluency practice, mathematical reasoning and problem-solving activities, enabling them to make connections across topics and apply their learning in a variety of contexts.

A consistent focus on challenge, support and high expectations ensures that every student is encouraged to achieve their potential. Through excellent teaching, positive relationships and a culture of inclusion, students develop confidence in their mathematical abilities and a belief that success is attainable for all.

Learning Journey

Impact

Our mathematics curriculum provides students with a strong foundation for future study, employment and lifelong learning. Students develop fluency in the fundamental skills of mathematics alongside a secure conceptual understanding, enabling them to recall and apply knowledge accurately, efficiently and with confidence.

Students become increasingly skilled at solving problems, reasoning mathematically and constructing logical arguments using precise mathematical language. They are able to approach challenges with resilience, think critically and apply their learning to a wide range of real-world situations.

We want every student to leave Lostock Hall Academy as an ambitious, confident and resilient learner, equipped with a nationally recognised qualification and the skills needed to succeed in their chosen pathway. Through high expectations and inclusive support, students are empowered to fulfil their potential and make a positive contribution to society, both now and in the future.
