The Under-13 girls’ cricket team recently took part in an inspiring tournament hosted by the Lancashire Cricket Foundation at Lancashire Cricket Club’s second ground in Farington.
Despite coming last in their recent tournament, the Under-13 girls showed exactly what the “spirit of cricket” is all about.
Reflecting on the day, their coach said the team “embodied the spirit of Cricket – the unspoken code we cricketers follow.” The girls made friends with players from other schools, listened carefully to advice, and, most importantly, never gave up when faced with defeat.
It was encouraging to see their determination throughout. There were some brilliant fielding performances that made the opposition work hard for every win, and the team continued to support each other from start to finish.
The girls also made the most of opportunities to improve. During a short break, they worked on developing their batting, which helped boost their confidence going into their final match.
Beyond the results, the tournament proved to be a valuable experience. It has hopefully inspired the players to keep building their skills and confidence, while also helping to open up conversations about why some girls can feel reluctant to take part in sport.
As the coach highlighted, it was a chance to reinforce the importance of having the courage to try new things “even if it doesn’t always go to plan.” With that mindset, the team is already laying the foundations for future progress and helping to encourage the next generation of girls to get involved in cricket.
